Biblical Teaching from a Reformed Perspective

I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy
name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou
hast magnified thy word above all thy name. Ps. 138:2

Text: Ps. 145:10-21

INTRODUCTION:

For years, Allstate Insurance Company has assured its customers that they are “in good hands.” This advertising slogan was developed to convince the public that by insuring your life, auto, or home, with their company you will be well taken care of in time of need or disaster.

But for those of us who are in Christ we have the assurance that we are in even better hands. The Bible says that you and I are in the hands of the Father.

John 10:27-29

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.

We understand from this verse that to be in the Father's hands means that we are secure in Christ. What great comfort that gives to us, especially in light of the fact that Satan, “as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Pet. 5:8).

TRANSITION:

But when the Bible speaks about the “hands” of God, it says so much more to us about the love and care of our Heavenly Father then merely that we are secure in Christ, as if that in itself were not enough. Here are just a few of the comforting thoughts we find throughout scripture:

1) We are fashioned by the hand of God

Job 10:8
Thine hands have made me and fashioned me together round about; yet thou dost destroy me.

Psalm 119:73
Thy hands have made me and fashioned me: give me understanding, that I may learn thy commandments.

2) We are sustained by the hand of the Lord

Job 12:9-10
Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this? In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.

Numbers 11:21-23
And Moses said, The people, among whom I am, are six hundred thousand footmen; and thou hast said, I will give them flesh, that they may eat a whole month. Shall the flocks and the herds be slain for them, to suffice them? or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to suffice them? And the LORD said unto Moses, Is the LORD'S hand waxed short? thou shalt see now whether my word shall come to pass unto thee or not.

3) We are strengthened by the hand of the Lord

Ezra 7:28
And hath extended mercy unto me before the king, and his counselors, and before all the king's mighty princes. And I was strengthened as the hand of the LORD my God was upon me, and I gathered together out of Israel chief men to go up with me.

Psalm 18:35
Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy right hand hath holden me up, and thy gentleness hath made me great.

Psalm 37:23-24
The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand.

4) We are delivered by the hand of the Lord

Exodus 13:14
And it shall be when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What is this? that thou shalt say unto him, By strength of hand the LORD brought us out from Egypt, from the house of bondage:

Deuteronomy 6:20-21
And when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What mean the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD our God hath commanded you? Then thou shalt say unto thy son, We were Pharaoh's bondmen in Egypt; and the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand:

5) We are redeemed by the hand of the Lord

Nehemiah 1:10
Now these are thy servants and thy people, whom thou hast redeemed by thy great power, and by thy strong hand.

6) We are lead by the hand of the Lord

Psalm 139:7-10
Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.

7) We are blessed by the hand of Lord

Job 2:10
But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.

Ecclesiastes 2:24
There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.

8) We are satisfied by the hand of the Lord

Psalm 145:16
Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living thing.

9) We are motivated by the hand of the Lord

2 Chronicles 30:12
Also in Judah the hand of God was to give them one heart to do the commandment of the king and of the princes, by the word of the LORD.

10) We are disciplined by the hand of the Lord

1 Samuel 12:15
But if ye will not obey the voice of the LORD, but rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then shall the hand of the LORD be against you, as it was against your fathers.

CONCLUSION:

The Bible says that “every good gift and every perfect gift is from above...” (James 1:17).

Everything we have and enjoy in life is a gift from the Father's hand.

Our business is to present the Christian faith clothed in modern terms, not to propagate modern thought clothed in Christian terms. Confusion here is fatal.
